Her Excellency Mrs. Gloria Enyonam Poku, Ghana’s Ambassador to the Republic of Senegal with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Gambia and the Republic of Cape Verde, was born on 24th May,1961. She attended Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast and the University of Ghana, Legon where she obtained a BA (Hons) degree in History and Sociology in 1987. She pursued further studies at the University of Ghana Legon and the Diplomatic Council, Oxford, United Kingdom where she received her Master in Business administration (Human Resource Management) and Post Graduate Diploma in Diplomacy, Diplomatic and Consular Law and Practice in 2000 and 2008 respectively.
Mrs. Poku worked as a Consultant with Ghanexim Economic Consultants Limited, a leading Economic Consulting firm involved in the planning of infrastructural projects, socio-economic, environmental and impact analysis as well as the preparation of financial, marketing and business plans for private sector companies. Mrs. Poku was involved in the identification and assessment of factors inhibiting the provision and maintenance of road infrastructure, especially in the rural areas, and in the general formulation of strategies and action plans to improve mobility of the rural deprived, integrate the rural communities into the national economy and stimulate village economies. She was part of a team that worked in various capacities as a consultant to government, the USAID, the World Bank, JICA and DFID. She also focused on Gender issues and analysis and performed the role of Human Resource Administrator.
Mrs. Poku joined the Ghana Foreign Service in February,2002 and worked as Assistant Director at the Human Resource and Administration and Europe Bureaux from February, 2002 to November,2002. From December 2002 to September, 2004 she set up and managed the official office of the then First Lady of the Republic of Ghana. She has served at the Ghana Permanent Mission in New York as Ghana’s representative on the Administrative and Budgetary Committee (Fifth Committee) of the United Nations, New York from September, 2004 to December, 2008. From September, 2012 to December, 2016 Mrs. Poku served at the Ghana Embassy in Berne, Switzerland as Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Chancery.
Prior to her appointment as Ambassador, she was Director, Multilateral Relations Bureau, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Accra from January, 2017 to July,2018.
Besides cooking, reading and listening to music, Mrs. Poku loves to involve herself in charity work. In this regard, she operates “Project Hagar”, a health -based NGO established in 2001, providing assistance and support in basic home healthcare, STD’s and HIV/AIDs prevention for the deprived in society.
She is married with three wonderful children.
